I've been low fandom energy lately, and decided to make some flist cuts. I won't even give the "we didn't seem to connect" line, because I really like and want to stay on friendly terms with all of you, whenever we might interact in "fandom spaces." I don't do very much fandom on my journal, anyway, so you won't be missing much. In case you do want to keep reading my entries, just PM me, and I'd be glad to add you back! Courtney and I are always making fun of "the boys" behind TXF, and when Chris made that joke at PaleyFest ("We did hire women on this show"), we were like, "Uh, no you didn't!" (Not including the production crew.) And then I got curious the other day and made up this list:

I just completed a flist-trim... maybe because it was so hot today? I don't know. I don't often do them, but sometimes enough time passes that I realize, oh, I've had this [perfectly nice] person friended for years, but I can't remember the last time we interacted at all - or we've just drifted and don't really connect any more. There aren't any hard feelings on my end at all, but every so often I find myself with a too-long friends list, and very little personal connection. It's largely my fault, because I'm a really bad commenter, but after five years here, my flist has evolved enough times that I'm used to the process. Not to gaze too long at my LJ-navel. Thought I'd leave a heads up!

Two things led to my idea for this post.

1) There has been more and more XF fic written on LJ in the past few months, what with the movie coming out, and that's exciting!

2) It's not easy to find. There isn't an active, comprehensive XF fic community on LJ, and the only way you can really know that it's there is if you know people, or know people who know people. That makes it harder to get momentum, and authors get less feedback, and readers don't know what's out there, resulting in LESS FIC. Less fic is no good. We want MORE.

So, I thought I'd do a modest survey of the XF fic currently¹ being written on LJ. I've tried to include everything I've come across; it's sort of a recs list and sort of just a survey. It's not exhaustive (and doesn't contain any slash or newschool characters), so go ahead and send me stuff for me to include, if you like. I probably won't update it in the future, though - it's just a jumping off place.

1. And by "currently" I mean, sometime in the past three years, if I've remembered where it is.

Hopefully it'll be useful as a roadmap, and generate more interest, so the fic trend can keep GOING AND GOING!

Okay, are you ready for the NEXT Vancouver picspam? That's right, less than a week after finishing that one, we we on another, this time with marikology, who came to stay with us from Wednesday to Sunday. It was really fun to have her here, and talk XF together! We even showed her around Bellingham, hee, and then headed up over the border on Friday morning.

I forgot to say that on the last trip, as on this one, we drove past the motel they shot in during Aubrey, notable only because it has a big TEEPEE out in front. What? Teepees? The Indians here didn't even LIVE in teepees!

In other unpictured locations, once upon a time Courtney and I also found the other house from Aubrey, the one that belongs to the old lady, because we got it mixed up with this one (and we didn't know it was the same as in Home.)

I apologized last time for the crappy screencaps I have to link to to show you things, but this time I've decided to blame leucocrystal, who is making a cap site that will be awesome and show all the right things, but IT IS NOT UP YET. Go and poke her some! (Just kidding. She's working on it!)

Friday:

First we went to White Rock and saw the Pilot motel and White Rock itself, but I've already posted those from last time! Then we detoured back into Surrey and found this SUPER AWESOME location...

The Home house! Where the Peacocks live with their inbred joy! (It's also the Cokely house from Aubrey, which Courtney is obsessed with because of the wallpaper.)

Uh huh, that's right.

First we parked the car along the road, where we could see the house across the railroad tracks. (.. the tracks where Mulder and Scully and the deputy put on kevlar and spy on the inbreds.)

If we'd jumped the ditch we could have had a view such as this.

Then we went over to the road entrance. There was a gravel road and a yellow fence. Here's a picture of some Havenites sitting on the fence, two summers ago, they told me. Of course, we had to be much more badass than them. ;) So we took a picture from the other side of the fence,

And I'm zooming a little bit on my camera, but we got about that far.

If you go rewatch Home (which we did that evening!) you can actually see them driving up to it! And we were there! THERE.

SO YEAH. MOVING ON.

Then we went to Mulder's dad's house again, and I got a nicer shot of it:

And then we went to the PILOT ROAD again.

And we had no spray paint or chalk, but we made an X.

And I took this picture of Courtney, which I really like.

And then made our way around the UBC endowment lands, into the city.

We wanted to make it to North Vancouver that afternoon, so we skipped the downtown stuff and left it for the next day. It was also starting to get dangerously late, and rush hour was starting. By the time we actually got through downtown, across the bridge, and all the way east to the studios, it was nearly dark:

We couldn't get a shot of the main entrance with the sign, unfortunately. (The last time we visited, it was Lions Gate Studios, but now it is back to North Shore Studios, as it was when they were filming XF.)

We drove back around to the crew entrance, and waited a while, but we were hungry, so we went across the street a little ways and ate at White Spot! Mmm. When we came out, it was even darker, but raining less. We went and parked behind the lot, where we could kind of see stuff.

We quickly got impatient, and Courtney was telling me to drive up and ask the guard if they were filming XF, but I REFUSED, so then we made her get out of the car and go ask him, instead.

She did! But the guy said, "No. I don't know." Hmmm.

Then it was definitely time to go home, but again with the RUSH HOUR. Arg. On the way back south we managed to stop at Riverview Hospital - which we'd gone to on a number of previous trips, but I didn't take pictures during last week's trip.

The time with all_shine_on and leucocrystal, all_shine_on was telling us how Riverview had been a big part of her childhood pool of local legends, so it was creepy for her to be there. It's a very imposing building, but I wasn't really creeped out by it.

UNTIL I WENT THERE AT NIGHT. IN THE DARK.

Guh, guys, they used to do lobotomies there, and electric shock therapy, and there were probably wooden chairs with leather arm restraints and people lived there who were crazy and all kinds of things happened that Nellie Bly wrote about!! I got out my flashlight and was peering in windows, and it really totally scared me.

And then I was totally exhausted and we drove home!

Saturday:

So on Saturday, we went straight up through Richmond to the city. But we did make one stop along the way,

Here's the part of the road where M&S drive by, look back, back up, and get out. Except the getting-out and running into the house part is their doubles. ~~Yes, I can tell things like that.~~

Then we headed up to the city and went to Gastown.

Gastown has a lot of pubs and restaurants that XF filmed in that no longer exist. Also it's where Mulder meets up with CSM in Redux II and they are totally obvs about it. Hello Gastown trolley.

While we were in Gastown, we were excited because we knew we were in the kinda-general-area where some filming on a blocked off street had been spotted the night before. Since we knew they were doing night shoots, we didn't bother hunting down the closed off street, but, it was still cool to be near-ish.

Then we drove back to the West End to go to Scully's apartment. Not that I don't already have too many pictures of it, but:

THEN we drove down under the Granville St bridge (on the north side) and found once again the benches where Mulder and Scully met up sekritly in s2.

As I wrote on the flickr page, these are "symbolically" the benches. This is where it was filmed, but the benches have been replaced, possibly multiple times.

Then we went to Mulder's apartment, woohoo!

Then we found the supermarket where Pusher buys a bunch of protein drinks - it used to be False Creek Grocery, but is no longer.

Vancouver trip! January 5-6

First off, I'm sorry for the lack of commentary! I'm pretty tired, but I wanna get this posted because I'm working tomorrow. Just because, I've posted the most recent pictures AND the pictures from when Courtney and I went the first time - on our trips in Feb 05, Feb 06, Jan 07, or July 07. It makes me nostalgic! I can't believe it's been almost three years since our first time, though. Yeesh!

I had a great, but tiring!, weekend. On Saturday morning we headed up across the border and to all_shine_on's house, where we left our car, switched into hers, and picked up leucocrystal at the Metrotown Skytrain. From there we headed down to Queen Elizabeth Park, and found THE "PILOT" HILL (aka the "Pilot knoll," and apparently calling it that makes me weird). Courtney and I just barely nabbed this one back in February 2005, so it was fun to revisit it in "broad daylight" (or what passes for it up here in winter).

We went past Mountain View Cemetery, which Courtney and I nabbed in Feb 05.

Then we kept on south to SW Marine Drive (with a few minor mishaps in navigation*), until we got to Mulder's dad's house.

*I just counted up how much time we spent location-hunting in the car, with all_shine_on driving, and me in the front seat, fumbling around with my lists and maps -- and considering we were at it for about fifteen hours total between the Thursday and Saturday-Sunday trips, we didn't really get lost much at all! And that's only the time we spent actively XF-ing, not travel to and from. If I had been driving, uh, things would have gone just a LITTLE LESS SMOOTHLY.

A couple times, when we were in neighborhoods like this, we could tell that people were curious or suspicious. As we were walking back to the car from Mulder's dad's house, this man was walking by with his baby strapped on the front. all_shine_on said hi and joked about how he actually had the baby zipped inside his own coat. He goes, "Yeah, although it kinda makes him look like he's an alien bursting out of my chest!" ... Is that code language, or what? OBVIOUSLY he was there for the same reason we were.

Then we went up Dunbar, and found NEW STUFF! Stuff Courtney and I hadn't seen before, that is. It was exciting.

Stong's Market, where Scully buys pickles & ice cream in Duane Barry! We went in to wander, and although taking pictures inside was prohibited (??), leucocrystal snuck some.

Then we went back to SW Marine Drive, (driving along the road in Conduit), and took the turnoff to

THE PILOT ROAD! (Again.) We only found this in July... but check out the difference in lighting!

Courtney and I definitely reinacted the "OH YES!" and leucocrystal has a picture of it, which she will post when she gets home. Oh boy.

As you can see, it was getting dark, but we went downtown and fit in a few more.

The Ovaltine Cafe is the diner from Jose Chung, where Mulder eats a lot of sweet potato pie. We went in, and sort of clumped together suspiciously while taking pictures (but I didn't get one), and then we ran out again!

You can't see it, but three or four people started coming to the window on the top floor, watching us take pictures out the window of the car. STEALTH.

We were all REALLY tired by then, and hungry (since we hadn't eaten all day), so we headed back to all_shine_on's house, but not before we soaked up some BC Flavor while eating at White Spot. Then we hung out, showed each other our XF toys, checked our email and the xfiles mod queue, laughed at Chris Carter, and cackled about our evil modly fascist schemes - oh wait!

Sunday morning it snowed, but we got out soon enough that driving was okay (although I got a little bit lost again...) - and we picked up leucocrystal and headed down to White Rock.

First we got the Pilot motel - they filming inside and out during "Pilot" and "Demons," and used it for the establishing shot in the motel in "The Truth," aww.

Courtney and I went to the Mulder summer cabin *last* January, but we couldn't get good pictures. This year, the undergrowth was thinned out enough for us to climb back toward the fence and take pictures *over* it. We are the Marines of XF location-hunts!

We went back up into Surrey, where we'd parked my car, had lunch in the mall, and said goodbye. Both all_shine_on and leucocrystal are very fun and funny girls, and I had a great time! leucocrystal, who is a photographer, should have a much better picspam coming out later this week when she gets home, so go check out her journal when she does! Until then, I'm keeping all my XF locations pictures at this Flickr account, if you're interested in seeing all the places we've been.

XF locations part 1

Very briefly because I need to get to bed!

On Thursday Courtney and I met up with all_shine_on and leucocrystal (they are awesome!), and we bashed around the GVRD for the day, hitting up Riverview Hospital (which Court and I'd been to before), where they filmed exteriors for "Pilot" and interiors for all KINDS of hospital/prison/court/etc scenes), the quarry-they-painted-red from "Anasazi" (sorry, no pictures! we didn't get close enough because they were working), Simon Fraser University, where Mulder met with Deep Throat (and all_shine_on went to school!) as well as

Buntzen Lake, aka Lake Okobogee and that lake in "Quagmire"

and the bridge from "End Game," although sadly they've redone it!

Sorry for the screencaps - the ones online don't have the right shots, and I don't have time to cap my own, at the moment!

Tomorrow we're leaving for another hunt, and we come back on Sunday. Wish us luck at the border! It's a weekend, so the traffic might be terrible.

fandomy lock!: wherein I natter about XF fandom

Sometimes XF fandom makes me sad. Consider: I'm on my laptop at 2:00 am, reading a moody little piece of fic that was written ten and a half years ago. It takes place in a roadside diner, one of my favorite crack!fic genres. The person who wrote it is a long way away - two or three new fandoms away, actually, but I skim around to her LJ sometimes and check in, just to see what's up. There's a good dozen or so of them on here, mostly Scullyficcers, who wrote lots of my favorite fic a long time ago, and are still around in other fandoms. I don't know them personally, for the most part, and that's the way I prefer it.

I discovered The X-Files in the summer of 2003, in between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, during the week I turned 15, a few months before my mom died. Actually, Courtney found it. She watched a few and I ignored her, but at night she came into my room at around 1:00 and told me she'd just watched this episode about the man hearing voices and the woman finding a space ship on the beach - and that earlier in the day she'd watched this one where there was something dramatic happening on a bridge, and the woman and man had been talking, because there was some deal with his sister and the woman was reassuring him - and she was hooked. The next day so was I. There were TNT reruns twice a day back then, rerunning different strings, so the first episodes I saw were The Calusari in the afternoon, and later that night, Amor Fati. I think that illustrates pretty well how I came into XF - completely upside down and out of order.

At the beginning I told Courtney I wasn't going to "do" XF online, because I knew there had been other fans for a long time, and it felt like digging through their garbage - or their underwear drawer; it felt presumptuous. But eventually there was no choice, and that is more or less exactly what I've been doing for the past four and a half years - digging through USENET discussions, OBSSE newsletters, and lots and lots and lots of fic. I read it once and then I read it again, because I forgot. I read it on Gossamer, I read it on Geocities, I read it on personal sites, I read it on the Internet Wayback Machine archive, I read it in neat columns of text format, I read it in html with badly photo-shopped dustjackets at the top of the page, and I even read a little of it on LJ. Reams and reams of it. I'd had fandoms before (Court and I just called them "obsessions"), but books are different and all of my movie/TV obsessions had never lasted longer than a month, at most. XF has lasted four and a half years, and it's not going anywhere yet - it is a unique love affair for a lot of reasons, but I won't go into all of that. Anyway, it's well known to most of us that it's a difficult show and a difficult fandom to measure up to. It wasn't my "first love" - it was like the crown of all previous loves.

Meanwhile the only fandom I had (or wanted) myself was Courtney and a handful of friends on LJ. There are times when I am very nostalgic for the golden years - that time when all the old BNFs and fic-writers had their discussion circles, and episodes actually AIRED, and everything perched precariously on Chris Carter's shoulders! But then I think about that for two more seconds and became mostly relieved that I missed it. I like my ghost ship well enough the way it is.

But still, some nights I surface and realize I've just gotten upset about meta written five or seven years ago, and I'm frequently struck by the date stamps on the top of all of this fic. It's sad to inhabit something and run up against this wall again and again: because most of the people I share this world with have left a long time ago, and if they haven't forgotten it, time and distance has rendered it a bittersweet nostalgia at best, an indifferent memory at worst.

I have also put it on YouTube, just because most XF vids end up there anyway, and this is an "official" version. The quality is so crappy, though, it makes my little vidding heart want to cry.

I started on this video sometime in late July. The pacing is slow and a little unusual, I think, and I tried to match the pacing of the clips to the music as closely as possible -- you'll have to be the judge of whether it's successful or not! It's my first vid, so I learned along the way - I had the theme and the "feel" and tone of it in mind from the beginning, but hardly did any planning regarding scenes or clips. I had a heck of a time trying to get the last minute or so of the song; and all the tiny little edits for timing just about did me in. Ah, well. I'm mostly satisfied.

Spaced and XF icons

I talked stellar_dust's ear off about Spaced earlier tonight, so as penance I decided to stop surfing around and doing nothing and instead post those icons I've been promising.

I tried as best I could to make sure the color and resolution on these icons was good enough - by and large there aren't high quality images available on the internet for Spaced, and my own caps from .avi were barely serviceable. Anyway! I'm happy with most of them.

I haven't made XF icons in *so long* and I only have a handful to post this time. As I was saying to foxestacado the other day, I feel like other people on LJ are doing it so well, I don't have anything to add! But I have a small new batch nonetheless.

Okay! Icons and religious art!

I apologize that I can't credit most of the original artists - I saved most of these pictures several months ago, and only intended them for personal use. I do know that a couple of them came from this guy on Flickr.

Some of the images used are from real icons, both historical and contemporary; some are artistic pieces created in imitation of, but outside of the tradition of, Eastern iconography. By mixing them, I don't mean to denigrate the tradition of icon writing, or the icons themselves, in any way. Some of the Old Testament figures, venerated in the Eastern Church, are not a part of the Western canon.

I went a little crazy about labeling them: if you hover your cursor over the icon, you will get a name and maybe a description. IT TOOK ME FOREVER.

Crises during the making of:
1. Every song ever written reminds me SOMEHOW of The X-Files, but how do I choose ones that will actually make some kind of demented sense to normal people?
2. Is there any way I can sneak in Celine Dion without looking like a loser? ... No. But I'm doing it anyway.
3. What's the difference between a song for the XF mix and a song for the MSR mix? NOT MUCH.
4. Damn, I can't include "Walking After You," I know you all already have it.
5. I actually hate West Side Story and "Somewhere," but I LOVE Phil Collins and this version. Therefore it is included.

Yes, The X-Files is long over, but there still hasn't been anything that could hold a candle to it! These songs were chosen because they illustrate in various ways what The X-Files was all about - paranoia, disillusionment, trust, despair, faith, loneliness, alienation, loss, restlessness, sacrifice, heroism, and love. Not necessarily in that order. It's more of a "mood" selection than the MSR mix, but trust me, the lyrics fit, too. Sometimes almost EERILY.
